I was trying to think of ways to pay teachers more. The number one country in the world with kids that make the highest scores is Finland. It turns out the difference from the rest of the world is the quality of their teachers. Ten years ago when they started their teacher enrichment program, it was as easier to get accepted into medical school as into the Finnish teacher training program. They disregarded all the programs that turned out mediocre teachers. And then these quality teachers more, about $69,500/year.

Spain pays its teachers the most of any country but their standard are mediocre so Spanish kids don’t do any better than the average. We need more money and we need a high standard for these better paid teachers, at least in the top 10% of their class and then, they spend a year in training under master teachers while they teach kids. (The Smartest Kids in the World and How they Got that Way, by Amanda Ripley). Finland lacked the white boards and computers that we have in the U.S. Teachers were the difference.

I was watching the Kentucky Derby and I thought, why can’t we have something that beautiful and exciting. And if grownups want to bet,  the house should be the State of N.C. or at least the County, in our case, Wake County. The money would ONLY go for teachers pay and tuition to smart kids with little money that would like to be teachers, the best teachers in the whole world. From that base, all economic success would flow. Corporate wives would want their husbands to locate their corporate headquarters and their factories here. There is a proposal up for vote this November to raise the sales tax to do the same thing. That is not nearly exciting. The area needs pro sports. Horse racing is a pro sport.

As an afterthought, in that Run for Roses, do you think they took the thorns off the roses before they through that bouquet around the winning horse’s neck?

Robin Williams is dead. I am not interested in many celebrities but he was one of the few, with whom I would have loved to have shared a beer.

I finally got to the barber today. I must look different because when I got home tonight, the dogs growled at me until they caught my scent. With people are seeing is believing.  With dogs, smelling is believing.

I was reading about Apple’s next great thing: the iWatch. It is computer one wears around the wrist. It is an example of wearable computers that includes Amazon’s eye glasses and Nike’s Fuelband. In some manner the iWatch will sense where you are in the world and your personal environment and it will supply you with the information that you need, probably from data stored in the Cloud. That sounds sort of vague as to how one orders up this information with no keyboard. The market is said to grow to 485 million units sold per year and Apple will have most of those sales.

Russians are again massing on the Ukraine  border as if to prepare for invasion. After the Russians separatists shot down the passenger airliner, most countries are joined in invoking sanctions on Russia. Good thing there is not Olympics to interfere with Putin’s world image.  After Putin pulled off his Anschluss of the Crimea much like Hitler in 1938 in Austria, now he wants to do so again. Interestingly, it was said that Hitler thought that Roosevelt was thinking of his own Anschluss or peaceful takeover, wait for it………………Canada. I carry around much trivia. I actually read Churchill’s History of WWII, all six volumes. It was an impressive work and Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. I am a great admirer of Churchill. I love the anecdotes of his life the best. He was once told a woman ‘My god you are ugly’. To which she replied, ‘And you, sir, are drunk!” To this Churchill replied, “Yes I am, Mum, but tomorrow I shall  be sober, but you shall still be ugly.”

The reason I bring this up, I think this is the reason that our prices jumped up a bit. Gasoline is up by 3.33 cents at the average rack in Selma. Diesel fuel moved up by 3.32 cents/gal. Prices are:
