Announcement:Texaco out Marathon in

Announcement:

Chevron Texaco is withdrawing from 12 markets on the East Coast including North & South Carolina and Virginia. By June 30th. All Texaco and Chevron stations must be debranded. Hopkins Oil will replace Texaco branded stations with Marathon Oil. Marathon Oil will rebrand the majority of the Texaco stations along with a good number of CITGO c-stores. CITGO is owned by Petroleos de Venezuela or the government of Venezuela. The CITGO dealers have seen their sales decline due to President Chavez’ comments about the U.S. If the truth were known, WilcoHess sells a great deal of Venezuelan gasoline as Hess shares a joint venture in a St. Croix refinery with the Venezuelan government. See below from the HESS website. Venezuelan crude is very heavy and only the newest refineries can process it.

HOVENSA, a joint venture between a subsidiary of Hess Corporation and a subsidiary of Petroleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA) operates a world-class merchant refinery in St Croix, USVI. The facility is one of the most modern refineries in the United States and, with crude oil processing capacity of 495,000 barrels per day (BPD), is one of the largest in the world.

The refinery is strategically located to serve gasoline and heating oil markets in both the U.S. Gulf Coast and along the eastern seaboard, providing a ready market for finished products. The refinery is capable of receiving and processing crudes from all over the world, although the majority of crude is supplied from Venezuela.

Location Map

The refinery operates a state-of-the-art Fluid Catalytic Cracking unit (FCC) with a current charge rate of 140,000 BPD. This unit, one of the largest in the world, is capable of producing 175,000 BPD of gasoline that meets stringent U.S. environmental standards.

In addition to the FCC, HOVENSA operates a delayed coking unit (Coker) that was commissioned in August 2002. The Coker allows for the manufacture of gasoline and heating oil using lower cost, heavy crudes, which significantly improve the conversion economics. To reduce air emissions associated with the unit, the design includes coke handling and storage systems that are completely enclosed.

Hopkins Oil and its Texaco dealers are  quite excited by this opportunity with Marathon. Hopkins Oil found it impossible to grow the Texaco brand in this area but should not have the same difficulty with Marathon. We will also be out from under the subjobbership with New Dixie which was cumbersome, but not to any fault of New Dixie. Scott Aman, President of New Dixie, was a pleasure to work with and to know as human being.

Best regards,

-Larry H.

I have plans for cataract surgery next Wednesday, April 7th, my daughter’s birthday. Prices will be on our website that day. I have a lot of trouble driving at night and it is getting harder and harder to see the computer and to read the type in most books.

Gasoline & Diesel Fuel Price Changes

Good morning,

I have about an inch of rain in my gauge this morning. I did get my grass mowed before the rain and I got the weeds out of my favorite flower bed. Gasoline prices are down at the average rack by 1.8 cents today. Diesel prices are up by 8/10ths of a cent. Crude oil is trading up at this time by $.97 to $80.97. Gasoline is trading up by 2.5 cents and diesel is up 3.5 cents. Diesel futures a year from now are 16 cents higher than today, but if that is all it goes up between now and then, we could all celebrate. Prices today are:

One more thing. With the week of good weather, we experienced a pickup in business that we have not seen since the Great Recession began. (I think the Great Recession will be the name that history will label this unhappy time). We were forced, like many of you, to lay people off. Last week, several of our customers ran out of fuel before we could get around. This has been unheard of since we installed the wireless tank monitors. I apologize to you.

I would like to hire another truck driver. If you know of anyone good, have them contact me. I will try and have the job description out on our website by tomorrow. We need a ten-wheeler driver, Class B with Hazmat as minimum requirements.

Have a good day,

-Larry H.

I took a trip with my little family to Costa Rica. The country is just south of the Equator. I expected a rain forest. Apparently it is very wet during four months of the year (starting in May) but for the rest of the year it is dry as a desert. The country is mountainous for the most part and it resembles North Carolina mountains only these mountains are three fourths dirt with one fourth rocks about the size of your hand so when it rains, they get mud slides across the roads. Most of the highways are two lane paved roads, much like North Carolina highways. All of the off road trucks were Mack. The highway trucks were a mix of U.S. brand trucks just like you see here. The biggest holdup we faced was not customs but the rental car agency (Thrifty) which lasted over an hour. The auto insurance was one government backed company, take it or leave it. The main visible crop at least in the northern part of the country was sugar cane. There were water melon stands everywhere along the highway and some with bananas and other fruits that I did not recognize. There seemed to be lots of fruit trees but even these were fenced in for cattle or horses. The whole country seemed to be one big cattle ranch. Highway 1 through San Jose was a six lane road narrowed down to 4 lanes when meeting a major bridge. Costa Rica boasts the largest number of traffic accidents, second only to the U.S. but with a fraction of the number of cars. I did not witness a single accidents but there are people walking by the road everywhere and bicycles on every road. The motor bikers seemed to have a death wish. You would look in your rear view mirror in the traffic jam of San Jose and here they come weaving between the cars. Most of them wore helmets but not all and they wore and most wore the reflective vest as if that would save them from harm. I don’t think so! There were yellow lines for no passing but that did not deter anyone with a bigger engine vehicle. They pass on curves and on hills, no problem.

We stayed in a resort on the Pacific side but on a bay. The strangest thing to me was to see these giant cactus plants under the tree canopy, many 20 feet tall or taller with multiple stalks like liriope. Some of the taller trees were well over 100 to 120 feet tall with no leaves this time of year, waiting for the rainy season I would guess. The bug spray that we packed went unused. I hardly saw a mosquito or fly the entire time. The speed limit on the highway was 80 Kilometers. All of the roads were bordered by a paved ditch about two feet deep and two feet wide. One misstep and you could have a big problem. I assume they have to pave the ditches or the fine dirt would wash away.

There is no army in Costa Rico, only a national police force. They put their money into their schools of which there seems to be school zone every 20 kilometers.

There is an unspoken agreement that with over 400,000 Americans living there, that the U.S. would take exception to anyone threatening Costa Rico. The dollar is accepted at all fast food and larger shops and the Superintendos (Super market) as the cash registers can covert the Colones to U.S. dollars (colones are equal to 1/5th of a dollar). All stores, even the McDonald’s had their own security guard. All houses had bars fronting them. The Hilton where we staid which was gated, the lobby had no doors and was open on both ends. The wind just blew through the middle of it. Most of the houses appeared to be one or two room buildings but all were painted bright colors with bougainvillea of many colors in the yards. The school children all wore the same neat uniforms. The people were very friendly. The mass transit system was made up of buses which were all were modern.  My kids and I went snorkeling on the beach. The sand was black (volcanic?) then, at the water’s edge, the same gray as beaches in N.C. We visited a national park where there was a active volcano. Their idea of an active volcano was steam coming out of a narrow pit surrounded by 120 foot tall trees or, alternatively, some burping white mud. All of the cars were Japanese. We rented the equivalent of a Toyota SUV which was diesel. I did not see one Suburban or Yukon the whole time I was there. The Japanese government donated a new Football(soccer) stadium to Costa Rico. We flew from RDU to Charlotte then a straight flight of four hours to Costa Rico. Both planes were Boeing jets.

Best regards,

-Larry H.
